The Situation

An effort is underway to redirect property tax dollars from the broader Madison County to benefit only Big Sky. While the current focus of the “Big Sky Wellness District Initiative” is on diverting funds from the Madison Valley Hospital District, the efforts will soon focus on Madison Valley’s schools and libraries.

The new “Big Sky Wellness District Initiative”, funded by the Big Sky Resort Area District (BSRAD) and led by Wellness in Action (WIA) and the Big Sky Wellness Coalition, seeks to remove Big Sky’s Madison County properties from the long-standing Madison Valley Hospital District.

Property taxes in the Madison Valley Hospital District support essential healthcare services for Big Sky and the broader Madison County community through the Madison Valley Medical Center (MVMC) — a system that has served the region for more than 75 years.

The Impact:

If Big Sky property owners succeed in withdrawing from the district, nearly $2.9 million annually in property taxes would be diverted away from MVMC. This shift in funding would have severe and far-reaching consequences:

  • Immediate budget shortfall and operating loss for MVMC, jeopardizing vital healthcare services.

  • Immediate harm to healthcare access across Madison County.

  • Strained resources, impacting not only rural residents but also Big Sky residents and employees who rely on these services.

While proponents argue that Big Sky does not benefit from the current hospital district, MVMC delivers critical healthcare services that rely on this funding to meet the diverse needs of Big Sky and all of Madison County. Redirecting these funds would undermine the broader healthcare system the entire region depends on.

Why It Matters

The proposed withdrawal highlights Big Sky property owners prioritizing their own interests over the well-being of Madison County’s broader community. If successful, it would:

  • Potentially force rural residents to bear higher taxes to make up for lost funding.

  • Threaten to weaken not only healthcare facilities, but other public services like schools and libraries.

  • Create a deeper divide between Big Sky’s exclusive enclave and the rural communities that support its workforce.

The Facts:

  • Big Sky's Tax Impact: Big Sky properties account for 85% of Madison County's Hospital District's taxable value and fund a very large portion of the county's critical services like schools, libraries, and healthcare.

  • Critical Healthcare: MVMC provides essential care to residents in Big Sky and across Madison County, including the workforce supporting Big Sky, most of whom live outside the area due to high living costs.

  • Shared Responsibility: Public taxes fund services—like schools, hospitals, and fire departments—that benefit everyone, regardless of individual use.
