Ennis School District

The Big Sky area is currently split between two school districts:

  1. The Ennis School District (Madison County), and

  2. The Big Sky School District (Gallatin County).

In 2022, Madison County collected $21.15M in property tax revenue from Big Sky properties, which included $2.5M to the Ennis K-12 School District.

The proposal detailed in the Big Sky Community Improvement Plan would annex Madison County’s Big Sky properties from the Ennis School District into the Big Sky School District. Shifting Big Sky’s Madison County tax base away from the Ennis School District would have a devastating financial impact on the District, threatening its ability to provide quality education and jeopardizing the school district’s  long-term viability.

If annexation proceeds, Big Sky’s property tax base would shift entirely to the Big Sky School District, resulting in:

  • A larger overall tax base for the Big Sky School District.

  • Reduced property tax rates for Big Sky School District residents.

  • Increased tax rates for Ennis School District residents to offset the funding loss.
